Newark police have identified the man as Willem “Will” Golden from Cohasset. Golden was visiting a resident at the home, which is an unofficial fraternity house near University of Delaware’s campus. Just before 4 p.m., Golden went onto the roof, which was wet from rain, and slipped and fell, police said.
Golden was a first-year student at Skidmore College in New York, where he was also a member of the hockey team.
“Will had been a member of the Skidmore community for less than a year but had already made many connections with students, faculty, staff, and teammates who will grieve his loss very deeply,” Skidmore College president Philip Glotzbach said in a letter to students.
“He had the ability to score and was, frankly, one of our most successful guys, but he always wanted to pass the puck first,” Rob Hutchison, the hockey team’s coach, told The Boston Globe. “That was more of a character trait of who he was. It was not only how he [approached] competition but life in general.”
The school will hold a vigil in his honor Tuesday evening.
