Bring on the clams! New England clam shacks opening this week

It may still feel like winter in New England, but the opening of clam shacks for the season is a promising sign that warm weather is on its way.

Tony’s Clam Shop in Quincy opens today. Hooray!

And Tony’s isn’t the only place opening up shop this week. Captain Scott’s Lobster Dock in New London, Conn. opened yesterday, and The Lobster Shack at Two Lights in Cape Elizabeth, Maine opens Saturday. Opening next week are Sea Swirl in Mystic, Conn. and The Lobster Pool in Rockport on April 4 and then Evelyn’s Drive-In in Tiverton, R.I. opens on April 7.

Of course, there is always a way to get clams in New England. So the hard-core clam fans have already been frequenting places like The Beach Plum in North Hampton, N.H., Petey’s in Rye, N.H., Bob Lobster on Plum Island, Kelly’s Roast Beef in Revere, Saugus, Natick, Danvers, and Medford, and Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House in Warwick, which are open year round.

Some of the clam shacks you’ll have to wait a little longer for? Abbott’s Lobster in the Rough in Noank, Conn., which opens May 2, The Clam Shack in Kennebunkport, Maine, which opens Mother’s Day weekend, and Falmouth’s Clam Shack, which opens Memorial Day weekend.
